The Thomas Huey Farm is a historic house located in Big Bone, Kentucky. It is officially recognized as a registered historic place. This means it is an important site with a special history worth preserving.

About the Thomas Huey Farm

The Thomas Huey Farm house was built in 1865. It is a beautiful example of Gothic Revival architecture. This style often includes pointed arches and decorative details. The house is made of brick and has one and a half stories.

The House's Design

The front of the house has three main sections, called bays. It features a central entrance with tall windows on each side. Above the main door, there is a special window called a transom. This window has decorative brackets, which are like small supports. For a very long time, people have called this house "Old Brick."

A Nearby Building

Behind the main house, there is another brick building. This building was once known as the "slave quarters." However, the main house was built after the Civil War ended. This means that no enslaved people ever lived in the main house itself. The Thomas Huey Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the year 2000.

The Legend of Buried Treasure

There is an old family story about Mr. Huey, who owned the farm. He was born in Big Bone in 1805. The story says that before the Civil War, he buried all his money. It was gold and silver, hidden in a large chest. After the war, he supposedly dug it up. He then used this money to build the house.

  • Burying money was a common thing to do during uncertain times.
  • Many people hid their valuables to keep them safe during the war.
  • Whether Mr. Huey's story is true or not, it's a fascinating part of the farm's history.

Haunted House Stories

Years later, in the 1930s, one of Mr. Huey's great-granddaughters bought the house. She lived there for many years. She, and other family members, believed the house was haunted. She even had a long-running argument with her sister, who lived across the road!

  • According to this occupant, she could "hear grandma chasing great-grandma through the attic at night."
  • The story goes that these two women froze to death in the attic.
  • A historian named Professor Lynwood Montell studies ghost stories in Kentucky. He says it's unusual but not unheard of for two ghosts to live in the same house.

Even people who moved into the area without knowing the old stories have felt the house was haunted. They were very interested to hear that their own feelings matched the old family legends.
