Sir Thomas Jervoise (born June 11, 1587 – died October 20, 1654) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like the main part of the UK Parliament today. He served there at different times between 1621 and 1653. Sir Thomas was a very strong supporter of the Parliamentary side during the English Civil War.

Who Was Sir Thomas Jervoise?

Sir Thomas Jervoise came from the Jervoise family, who lived in Britford, Wiltshire. He was given the title of Knight by King James I on August 20, 1607, in a place called Sarum. This was a special honor from the King.

His Time as a Member of Parliament

Sir Thomas Jervoise was first chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1621. He represented the area of Whitchurch. He held this job until 1625.

He was elected again in 1628 and served until 1629. At that time, King Charles I decided to rule England without calling Parliament for many years.

Serving in Important Parliaments

When Parliament was called again, Jervoise was re-elected as MP for Whitchurch in April 1640. This short meeting of Parliament was known as the Short Parliament.

Later that same year, in November 1640, he was elected again for the Long Parliament. This Parliament lasted for a very long time. Sir Thomas continued to be an MP even after an event called Pride's Purge. He was part of the Rump Parliament until 1653. He was a Puritan and believed strongly in the Parliament's cause during the English Civil War.

Sir Thomas's Family Life

In July 1601, when he was 14 years old, Sir Thomas Jervoise married Lucy Powlet. Lucy was the daughter of Sir Richard Powlet, who lived in Herriard and Freefolk, Hampshire.

Through this marriage, Sir Thomas gained the Herriard estate. This also gave him more influence in Hampshire. His family already owned a lot of land in Wiltshire, Worcestershire, and Shropshire.

Lucy passed away in 1641. Within two years, Sir Thomas married again to Frances Jay. She was the daughter of Thomas Jay from Foscott, Buckinghamshire.

Sir Thomas had four sons and two daughters with his first wife, Lucy. One of his sons died before him. He also had two sons with his second wife, Frances.

One of his sons, Richard Jervoise, also became an MP for Whitchurch and served alongside his father. His oldest son, Thomas Jervoise, later became an MP for Hampshire.
