Thomas Kendrick was born in 1839 in a town called Bath, Maine. He lived there when he decided to join the Navy. During the Civil War, he worked as a coxswain on a ship named the USS Bienville. A coxswain is a sailor who steers a boat or helps manage the crew.
Kendrick bravely volunteered to join another ship, the USS Oneida. This was for a very important fight, the Battle of Mobile Bay. The battle happened on August 5, 1864. During this fight, Thomas Kendrick showed amazing courage and dedication to his job. Because of his brave actions, he received the Medal of Honor. This special award was given to him on December 31, 1864.
