Thomas Lyon (born 1704, died 1753) was an important Scottish nobleman. He was also a politician who served in the British Parliament. He became the 8th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
Early Life and Family
Thomas Lyon was born in 1704. He was the seventh son of John Lyon, 4th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. His mother was Lady Elizabeth Stanhope. She was the daughter of Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl of Chesterfield. Thomas was baptized on July 6, 1704.
A Career in Politics
Thomas Lyon became a politician. He was a member of the Tory party. In 1734, he was elected to the House of Commons. This is a part of the British Parliament. He represented the area of Forfarshire.
His time in Parliament was short. On January 4, 1735, he became the Earl of Strathmore. This happened after his brother passed away. When someone becomes an Earl, they usually leave the House of Commons. So, Thomas Lyon resigned his seat.
Marriage and Children
On July 20, 1736, Thomas Lyon married Joan Nicholson. She was from West Rainton in County Durham. They were married in Houghton-le-Spring.
Thomas Lyon passed away on January 18, 1753. He had seven children with Joan. They had three sons and four daughters.
