People often called him "the beautiful Lord Strathmore" because of his good looks. A writer named Jesse Foot later described him. He said that Lord Strathmore was a sincere friend and a proud Scotsman.

About John Bowes

John Bowes was the son of Thomas Lyon, 8th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. His mother was Jean Nicholson.

In 1760, he went on a trip called the Grand Tour of Europe. This was a long journey that young noblemen often took to learn about art, history, and culture. His college friend Thomas Pitt joined him for the first few months.

Marriage and Family Life

On 24 February 1767, John married Mary Eleanor Bowes in London. Mary was very wealthy and owned large estates, like Gibside.

Because of her father's will, John took his wife's last name, Bowes. This was a common practice for wealthy families at the time. It meant that a special law, called an Act of Parliament, was needed to officially change his name.

John and Mary had five children:

  • Lady Maria Jane Lyon (born 1768)
  • John Lyon-Bowes, 10th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (born 1769)
  • Lady Anna Maria Lyon (born 1770)
  • Hon. George Bowes-Lyon (born 1771)
  • Thomas Bowes-Lyon, 11th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (born 1773)

Serving in Parliament

From October 1767 until he passed away, John served in the House of Lords. He was a Representative peer for Scotland. This meant he was chosen to represent Scotland's interests in the British Parliament.

His Death

Lord Strathmore died on 7 March 1776. He was traveling by sea to Portugal when he passed away from tuberculosis. After his death, his sons, John and then Thomas, became the next Earls.
