Thomas George Lyon-Bowes, 12th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (born September 28, 1822 – died September 13, 1865) was an important Scottish nobleman and a keen cricketer. From 1834 to 1846, he was known as Lord Glamis.
Who Was Thomas Lyon-Bowes?
Thomas George Lyon-Bowes was a Scottish peer. A peer is a member of the nobility, a group of people with special titles and high social rank. He held the title of the 12th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
Early Life and Family
Thomas was the oldest son of Thomas Lyon-Bowes, Lord Glamis. His grandfather was Thomas Bowes-Lyon, who was the 11th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. His mother was Charlotte Grimstead. When his grandfather passed away in 1846, Thomas inherited the title and became the 12th Earl.
A Life in Cricket and Politics
Thomas Lyon-Bowes loved playing cricket. He was an amateur player, meaning he played for fun, not as a job. He played in important matches, known as first-class cricket, for the Marylebone Cricket Club from 1844 to 1857.
In 1852, he was chosen to be a Scottish representative peer. This meant he was one of the noblemen who represented Scotland in the House of Lords, which is part of the United Kingdom's Parliament. He held this important position until July 1865.
Later Life
Lord Strathmore married Charlotte Maria Barrington on April 30, 1850. She was the daughter of William Barrington, 6th Viscount Barrington. They did not have any children. Sadly, Charlotte passed away on November 3, 1854, when she was only 27 years old.
Lord Strathmore died on September 13, 1865, at the age of 42. His younger brother, Claude, became the next Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
