Thomas Martin Lindsay (1843–1914) was an important Scottish historian and teacher. He worked as a professor and later as the principal of the Free Church College in Glasgow. He mostly wrote about church history, which is the story of how churches and religious beliefs have changed over time. His most famous books include Luther and the German Reformation and A History of the Reformation.
His Life and Work
Thomas Martin Lindsay was born on October 18, 1843, in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was the oldest son of Reverend Alexander Lindsay. He went to school in Lesmahagow.
Early Education and Career
Lindsay studied divinity (which is the study of religion) at the University of Glasgow. He then continued his studies at the University of Edinburgh. In 1869, he became a minister in the Free Church of Scotland.
In 1872, he became a Professor of Church History at the Free Church College in Glasgow. This meant he taught students about the history of the church. He lived in the Hillhead area when he married Anna Dunlop. Anna Lindsay had also been a student in Edinburgh.
Leading the College
In 1902, Lindsay became the Principal of the College. This is like being the head of a school or university. He then moved to a larger house in Kelvinside, Glasgow.
Lindsay was also one of the people who helped start the Glasgow and West of Scotland Association for Women's Suffrage. This group worked to get women the right to vote. He believed in equal rights for women.
He also supported his friend, William Robertson Smith, during a difficult time between 1877 and 1881. Smith lost his job at another college, but Lindsay stood by him. Thomas Martin Lindsay passed away in Glasgow on December 6, 1912.
His Family
Thomas Lindsay married Anna Dunlop. Anna Lindsay was very active in helping women get a better education. She was one of the people who helped start the Glasgow Association for the Higher Education of Women in 1868. Many people said that Anna Lindsay's name was closely connected to the women's rights movement in Scotland.
Their children included Alexander Lindsay. Alexander also became a professor and later led a famous college called Balliol College at the University of Oxford.
