Thomas McCarthy (born in 1954) is an Irish poet and novelist. He is also a critic, which means he writes reviews about books and art. He was born in Cappoquin, a town in County Waterford, Ireland.
Thomas McCarthy went to University College Cork. There, he was part of a group of writers. This group included other famous Irish writers like Theo Dorgan and Sean Dunne. McCarthy also helped edit two literary magazines: The Cork Review and Poetry Ireland Review.
He has published many collections of poetry. These include The Sorrow Garden and Merchant Prince. His poems often explore themes like Irish history and memory. He has also written two novels, Without Power and Asya and Christine.
Thomas McCarthy is married and has two children. He lives in Cork City. He worked in the City Libraries until he retired. In 1977, he won the Patrick Kavanagh Poetry Award. This is a special award for poets.
He wrote a book called "Rising from the Ashes." This book tells the story of the Carnegie Free Library in Cork City. The library was burned down by the Black and Tans in 1920. The Black and Tans were a group of British soldiers. McCarthy's book describes how people from all over the world helped rebuild the library's collection.
