Thomas Morgan (died 1595) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Morgan (born around 1542, died 1595) was a brave Welsh soldier and a politician. He was known for his military skills and for serving in the English Parliament.

Morgan was a professional soldier, meaning he was trained and paid to fight. He volunteered to raise his own group of soldiers, called a regiment. He led them into battles against the Spanish during a long conflict known as the Eighty Years War. This war was fought between Spain and the Netherlands, who wanted their independence.

Soldier and Leader

Morgan fought in several important battles. In 1572, he helped in the Relief of Goes, which was a rescue mission for a city. The next year, in 1573, he helped defend the city of Delft from attack. In 1574, he was part of a successful naval (sea) battle in the Scheldt river. These battles showed his courage and leadership.

Governor of Bergen op Zoom

From 1587 to 1593, Morgan was the governor of a military base in Bergen Op Zoom, a city in the Netherlands. This base had mostly English soldiers. In September 1588, a powerful leader called the Duke of Parma tried to attack and take over the city.

With the help of Lord Willoughby, Thomas Morgan and his soldiers managed to defeat the Duke of Parma. This was a big victory and showed how strong their defense was.

A Member of Parliament

Besides being a soldier, Thomas Morgan was also a politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Parliament of England. An MP is someone chosen to represent an area and help make laws for the country.

Morgan served as an MP for two different areas. He represented Shaftesbury in 1571. Later, in 1593, he was an MP for Wilton. This shows he was important both in the military and in the government of his time.
