Thomas Harald Myhre (born 16 October 1973) is a Norwegian football manager and a former professional footballer. He played as a goalkeeper. Myhre is currently the manager of HamKam. Before he stopped playing, his last club was Kongsvinger in Norway. Myhre played 56 games for the Norwegian national team. He was part of the Norwegian teams at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the 2000 European Championship.

Thomas Myhre's Football Journey

Starting His Career in Norway

Thomas Myhre was born in Sarpsborg, Norway. He began his football journey with Moss F.K. in the Norwegian First Division. In 1993, when he was 19, he joined Viking in the Premier League. He quickly became Viking's main goalkeeper, playing in every match that season.

Myhre also played for the Norway national under-21 team. He played 27 games for them. After being injured in 1996, he returned strong in 1997. This caught the eye of the English club Everton. They bought him for £800,000 in November 1997.

Playing Abroad: England and Beyond

Myhre quickly became Everton's first-choice goalkeeper. On 22 April 1998, he played his first game for the Norway national team. He helped them win 2–0 against Denmark. Myhre was then chosen for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He was a backup goalkeeper for Norway at that tournament.

After an ankle injury in 1999, Myhre lost his starting spot at Everton. He then went on loan to several different teams.

Loan Spells and New Teams

Over the next two years, Myhre played for four different clubs on loan.

  • In November 1999, he was loaned to Rangers in Scotland.
  • In 2000, he joined Birmingham City. He started well, even saving a penalty kick in his first game.
  • After the Euro 2000 tournament, Everton loaned him to Tranmere Rovers.
  • He also played for Danish club FC Copenhagen, where he helped them win the Danish Superliga.

In November 2001, Myhre left Everton for good. He was sold to the Turkish club Beşiktaş. After one season there, he moved back to England in July 2002 to play for Sunderland. At Sunderland, he was often a backup goalkeeper and faced injuries. He was loaned to Crystal Palace in October 2003.

Despite injuries, Myhre became Sunderland's main goalkeeper again in the 2004–05 season. He played 31 league games and helped the club get promoted to the Premier League. He also returned to the national team, playing in many qualifying games for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

In June 2005, Myhre's contract with Sunderland ended. He chose not to stay. On 21 July 2005, he returned to Norway and joined Fredrikstad F.K.. He played three matches there before signing a two-year deal with English club Charlton Athletic in August 2005. He became Charlton's starting goalkeeper in December 2005 and had a great run, keeping 10 clean sheets.

Returning to Viking and Retirement

In 2007, Myhre moved back to his former club, Viking. He faced a back injury in 2008, which limited his playing time. He played most of the 2009 season for Viking. His time at Viking ended in 2010 due to a contract dispute.

On 5 March 2010, Myhre signed with Kongsvinger. On 11 March 2011, Thomas Myhre announced that he was retiring from playing football.

Playing for Norway's National Team

Myhre was chosen to play for Norway at the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He was a substitute goalkeeper for the team.

At the 2000 European Championship (Euro 2000) in June, Myhre played in all three of Norway's games. He did not let in any goals against Spain and Slovenia. He only let in one goal during the whole tournament.

His last game for Norway was on 28 March 2007, in a Euro 2008 qualifier against Turkey. Norway was leading 2–0 at halftime, but Turkey scored two goals in the second half, ending the game in a 2–2 draw. Myhre described this match as his "worst day on the field."
