Thomas Harald Myhre (born October 16, 1973) is a Norwegian football manager and former professional footballer. He played as a goalkeeper during his career. Today, he is the manager of Moss. Before he stopped playing, his last club was Kongsvinger in Norway. Myhre played 56 games for the Norwegian national team. He was also part of the Norwegian teams at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the 2000 European Championship.

Thomas Myhre's Football Journey

Starting Out in Norway

Thomas Myhre was born in Sarpsborg, Norway. He began his football journey with Moss F.K. in the Norwegian First Division. In 1993, at just 19 years old, he moved to Viking in the Premier League. He quickly became the main goalkeeper for Viking, playing in every game that season.

Myhre was also the top goalkeeper for the Norway national under-21 team. He played 27 games for them. After missing the 1996 season due to an injury, he returned strong in 1997. His great performance caught the eye of the English club Everton, who bought him for £800,000 in November 1997.

Playing in England and Beyond

Myhre quickly became Everton's first-choice goalkeeper. On April 22, 1998, he played his first game for the Norwegian national team. He helped Norway win 2–0 against Denmark without letting in any goals. Myhre was then chosen for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He was a substitute goalkeeper for Frode Grodås at the tournament.

After an ankle injury, Myhre lost his starting spot at Everton in 1999. He then spent time playing for different teams on loan.

Loan Spells and New Clubs

Over the next two years, Myhre played for four different teams while still with Everton.

  • In November 1999, he was loaned to Rangers in Scotland.
  • In 2000, he moved to Birmingham City. He started well, even saving a penalty kick in his first game. His good play helped him return to the national team for Euro 2000.
  • After Euro 2000, Everton loaned him to Tranmere Rovers.
  • He also played for Danish club FC Copenhagen, where he helped them win the Danish Superliga.

In November 2001, Myhre left Everton for good. He was sold to the Turkish club Beşiktaş. After one season there, he returned to England in July 2002 to play for Sunderland. At Sunderland, he was initially the second-choice goalkeeper. He was loaned to Crystal Palace in October 2003.

Injuries affected his time at Sunderland. However, he became the main goalkeeper again in 2004–05. He played 31 league games as Sunderland won promotion to the Premier League. He also returned to the national team, playing in many qualifying games for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Myhre's contract with Sunderland ended in June 2005. He decided not to extend it. On July 21, 2005, he moved back to Norway to join Fredrikstad F.K.. He played three games for Fredrikstad before joining English club Charlton Athletic in August 2005. He became Charlton's starting goalkeeper in December 2005. He had 10 clean sheets that season.

Coming Back to Viking

In 2007, Myhre returned to his former club, Viking. A back injury kept him out for most of 2008. He played most of the 2009 season for the team. His contract with Viking ended in 2010.

Final Playing Days

On March 5, 2010, Myhre signed with Kongsvinger. On March 11, 2011, Myhre announced that he was retiring from playing football.
