Sir Thomas Nicolson of Carnock, 1st Baronet (born before 1605 – died 8 January 1646) was an important Scottish man. He worked as a lawyer, owned land, and helped manage things for Stirlingshire. He was also a postmaster, which meant he helped with mail delivery.
Early Life and Family
Thomas Nicolson was the son of John Nicolson and Elizabeth Henderson. His father was a lawyer in Edinburgh. Thomas also had an older brother named Sir John Nicolson. Their grandmothers were sisters, both daughters of Sir John Swinton.
Sir Thomas's Career
Thomas became a lawyer in 1612. In 1623, he was given the job of postmaster for Cockburnspath. This was a reward for helping John Murray, 1st Earl of Annandale.
In 1634, Thomas Nicolson bought Carnock House near Stirling. He bought it from John Drummond. Thomas was known for supporting the minister James Guthrie.
On January 16, 1637, he was given a special title: Baronet Nicolson of Carnock. This title came from Nova Scotia. He then decorated his home at Carnock with new stone and plaster designs showing his family's special symbols. Some of these designs from his house are now kept by Historic Environment Scotland.
