Discovering the Hubbard House

The Thomas Russell Hubbard House stands in a neighborhood northeast of downtown Manchester. You can find it on the north side of Myrtle Street. It's a large, two-and-a-half-story house made of wood. The roof has a unique and interesting shape.

What Makes This House Unique?

One of the most striking features of the house is its four-story tower. This tower has special corner decorations called quoins. The top level of the tower is open and has cool round-arch windows. The house also has deep eaves, which are the parts of the roof that hang over the walls. These eaves are supported by decorative brackets, which is typical of the Italianate style. The house has many parts that stick out, giving it an interesting and uneven shape.

Inside the house, you can see how much Thomas Russell Hubbard loved wood. The interior shows off his lumber products. There is high-quality woodwork using many different kinds of wood. You can also find beautiful marble around the fireplaces.

Who Was Thomas Russell Hubbard?

Thomas Russell Hubbard built this house in 1867. He bought a whole city block of land in 1864 from the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. Hubbard grew up on a farm, but he became a very successful businessman. He made wooden window sashes, doors, and window blinds. He also ran a local lumber yard.

When the house was first built, it had amazing views to the west. You could see over the Merrimack River to the hills nearby. Later on, another important person owned the house. His name was David B. Varney, and he was the mayor of Manchester in the 1890s. The house used to have a building for carriages, but that was taken down when the land was divided for more buildings.
