Thomas Taylour, 1st Earl of Bective (born October 20, 1724 – died February 14, 1795) was an important Irish leader. He was a peer (a noble person) and a politician in Ireland. He held several important titles during his life.

Early Life and Family

Thomas Taylour was the oldest son of Sir Thomas Taylor, 2nd Baronet, and Sarah Graham. His father was also a Member of Parliament (MP). Thomas had a sister named Henrietta. She married Richard Moore.

His family had been in Ireland since 1652. Thomas's grandfather, Sir Thomas Taylor, 1st Baronet, moved there from England. Thomas Taylour himself became a Baronet in 1757, after his father passed away.

He studied at Trinity College, Dublin, which is a famous university in Ireland.

Political Career and Titles

Thomas Taylour started his political journey in 1747. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Kells in the Irish House of Commons. He served as an MP until 1760.

In 1760, he received a special honor. He was given the title of Baron Headfort. This made him a member of the Peerage of Ireland, which means he was part of the nobility.

He received even more honors later:

  • In 1762, he became Viscount Headfort.
  • On October 24, 1766, he was given the highest title, Earl of Bective.

In 1783, Thomas Taylour helped start a special group called the Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick. This is a very important order of knights in Ireland. In 1785, he also joined the Privy Council of Ireland. This group advises the ruler.

Family Life

On July 4, 1754, Thomas Taylour married Hon. Jane Rowley. Her father, Hercules Langford Rowley, was also a well-known figure. Thomas and Jane had ten children together, four daughters and six sons.

Some of their notable children included:

  • Thomas Taylour, 1st Marquess of Headfort (1757–1829): He was their oldest son and later received an even higher title.
  • Major Hon. Hercules Taylour (1759–1790): He also served as an MP for Kells, just like his father.
  • General Hon. Robert Taylour (1760–1839): Another son who represented Kells in Parliament.
  • Clotworthy Rowley, 1st Baron Langford (1763–1825): He inherited some family estates and became a Baron himself.
  • Rev. Hon. Henry Edward Taylour (1768–1852): He became a clergyman.
  • Lady Henrietta Taylour (died 1838): One of their daughters.

Thomas Taylour, the 1st Earl of Bective, passed away on February 14, 1795, when he was 70 years old. His oldest son, Thomas, took over his titles. His wife, the Countess of Bective, lived until 1818.
