Thomas Vinterberg (born May 19, 1969) is a famous Danish film director. He is known for starting a special filmmaking group called Dogme 95 with another director, Lars von Trier. This group created rules to make movies in a simpler way.

Thomas Vinterberg has directed many well-known films. Some of his most famous movies include The Celebration (1998), The Hunt (2012), and Another Round (2020). For Another Round, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director. This was a big honor, as he was the first Danish director to get this nomination.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Vinterberg was born in Frederiksberg, Denmark. He studied filmmaking at the National Film School of Denmark. He graduated in 1993 with a short film called Last Round (Sidste omgang).

This film won several awards. It received prizes at the International Festival of Film Schools in Munich. It also won First Prize at a festival in Tel Aviv.

His Career in Film

In 1993, Vinterberg made his first TV drama for DR TV. He also directed a short film called The Boy Who Walked Backwards [da; ru]. This film won awards at several festivals, including the Nordisk Panorama Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.

His first full-length movie was The Biggest Heroes (De Største Helte). This was a road movie that became very popular in Denmark.

Starting Dogme 95

In 1995, Thomas Vinterberg helped create the Dogme 95 movement. He started it with Lars von Trier, Kristian Levring, and Søren Kragh-Jacobsen. This group wanted to make movies that focused on the story and acting, without fancy special effects or big budgets.

In 1998, Vinterberg directed The Celebration (Festen). This was the very first Dogme movie. He followed all the strict rules of the Dogme manifesto. The film won many awards, including the Jury Prize at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival.

Later Films and Success

In 2003, Vinterberg directed It's All About Love. This was a science fiction romance film. It was made in English and starred famous actors like Joaquin Phoenix and Claire Danes.

His next English-language film was Dear Wendy (2005). Even though it didn't do well in Denmark, Vinterberg won the Silver George for Best Director at the 27th Moscow International Film Festival. He then made a smaller Danish film, En mand kommer hjem (2007).

In 2010, his film Submarino was nominated for the Golden Bear award at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival. Two years later, in 2012, his film The Hunt was a big success. It competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. It was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards.

In 2015, Vinterberg directed Far from the Madding Crowd. This movie was based on a famous book by Thomas Hardy. It starred actors like Carey Mulligan. He later worked with actor Matthias Schoenaerts again in the film Kursk (2018). This movie was about a real-life submarine disaster.

Another Round and Personal Dedication

In 2019, Thomas Vinterberg faced a very sad event. His daughter, Ida, passed away in a car accident. He dedicated his 2020 film, Another Round (Druk), to her. He even filmed parts of the movie at her school with her classmates.

Another Round became a huge success. Vinterberg was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for this film. The movie also won the BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language and the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. When he accepted the Oscar, he dedicated the award to his daughter, Ida.

In 2024, Vinterberg directed his first TV series for Denmark. It's called Families like Ours. This series explores a future where Denmark has to be evacuated because of rising sea levels.

Awards and Special Recognitions

In April 2016, the French government gave Thomas Vinterberg a special honor. They made him a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. This award recognizes people who have contributed a lot to arts and literature.
