Thomas Ros: Early Life and Family
Thomas Ros was born on September 26, 1406. He was the second son of William Ros, 6th Baron Ros. His mother was Margaret Fitzalan. Margaret was the daughter of John FitzAlan, 1st Baron Arundel. Her mother was Eleanor Maltravers, 2nd Baroness Maltravers.
Thomas Ros: A Young Soldier and Baron
Thomas Ros became the Baron Ros after his older brother, John Ros, 7th Baron Ros, died. John had no children and was killed in battle in 1421. Thomas then took on his brother's important title and duties.
Just like his brother, Thomas joined the Hundred Years' War. This was a long series of conflicts between England and France. Thomas fought in the Battle of Verneuil in 1424. He served under the command of John, Duke of Bedford. For his bravery, Henry VI of England made him a knight in 1426. Henry VI was the Duke of Bedford's nephew.
Thomas continued to serve the Duke of Bedford in 1427. He was also called to the Parliament of England in 1429. This meant he had a role in the government. Sadly, in 1430, Thomas drowned in the Seine river during a small fight. He was only 23 years old.
Thomas Ros: Marriage and Children
Thomas Ros married a woman named Eleanor Beauchamp. Eleanor was the daughter of Richard Beauchamp, 13th Earl of Warwick. Thomas and Eleanor had three children together:
- Thomas Ros, 9th Baron Ros (born September 9, 1427 – died May 17, 1464). He later became the 9th Baron Ros.
- Sir Richard Ros. He married Jane or Joan Knyvet.
- Margaret Ros. She married twice. First, to William de Botreaux, 3rd Baron Botreaux. Second, to Thomas Burgh, 1st Baron Burgh of Gainsborough.
After Thomas Ros died, his wife Eleanor married two more times. Her second husband was Edmund Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset. Her third husband was Walter Rokesley.
