Thomas Ros (born September 9, 1427 – died May 17, 1464) was an important noble during a time of big changes in England. He was known as the 9th Baron Ros of Helmsley. A "Baron" was a powerful lord who owned a lot of land.

Thomas lived during the Wars of the Roses. This was a series of battles between two powerful families, the House of Lancaster (who used a red rose as their symbol) and the House of York (who used a white rose). Thomas was a strong supporter of the Lancasters.

Conisbrough Castle, where Thomas Ros was born

Thomas Ros was born on September 9, 1427. His birthplace was Conisbrough Castle in Yorkshire, England. He was the oldest son of Thomas Ros, 8th Baron Ros. His mother was Eleanor Beauchamp.

Eleanor's father was Richard Beauchamp, 13th Earl of Warwick. This made Thomas connected to some very important families in England. He also had half-brothers, Henry Beaufort, 3rd Duke of Somerset and Edmund Beaufort, 4th Duke of Somerset.

Becoming a Baron

Thomas became the Baron Ros when he was only four years old. This meant he inherited his father's title and lands very early. When he turned 18, the king gave him full control of all his family's estates.

Because Thomas was very loyal to King Henry VI of England, he received special rewards. For example, he didn't have to pay the usual taxes on wool he exported. In 1460, the king gave him £40 every year. This was to help him with the costs of serving the king.

Role in the Wars of the Roses

Thomas Ros was a key figure for the Lancastrian side in the Wars of the Roses. He fought in several important battles.

Key Battles and Loyalty

In 1460, Thomas was part of the Lancastrian army that won the Battle of Wakefield. This was a big victory for their side.

In February 1461, he was made a knight after another Lancastrian win at the Second Battle of St Albans. This honor was given by Edward of Westminster, who was the Prince of Wales.

Later that year, Thomas was with King Henry VI in York. They received bad news about the Lancastrian defeat at the Battle of Towton. After this loss, Thomas went with the king as they fled to Berwick for safety.

Challenges and Final Battle

Because he was so loyal to King Henry VI, Thomas Ros faced serious problems when the Yorkist side gained power. On November 4, 1461, Parliament declared him a "traitor." This meant his lands and titles could be taken away.

He continued to fight for the Lancastrian cause. On April 25, 1464, he led part of the Lancastrian army at the Battle of Hedgeley Moor. However, his men had to retreat.

Thomas then took part in the Battle of Hexham on May 15, 1464. This battle was a major defeat for the Lancastrians. The Yorkist army, led by John Neville, Marquess of Montagu, crushed them.

After the battle, Thomas Ros was found hiding in a wood. He was captured and was beheaded the very next day in Newcastle. His lands were taken by the crown. Belvoir Castle, which belonged to the Ros family, was given to William, Lord Hastings.

Marriage and Children

Thomas Ros married Philippa Tiptoft. She was the daughter of John Tiptoft, 1st Baron Tiptoft. Together, Thomas and Philippa had five children:

  • Edmund Ros, 10th Baron Ros
  • Eleanor Ros, who married Sir Robert Manners
  • Isabel Ros, who married three times: Sir Thomas Everingham, Sir Thomas Grey, and Sir Thomas Lovell
  • Margaret Ros
  • Joan Ros

After Thomas died, his wife Philippa married again on August 20, 1471. Her second husband was Edward Grimston.
