Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thompson's Island is a special place in the upper Allegheny River. It's an island made of dirt and sand carried by the river, and it's about 60-acre (240,000 m2) big. That's like having 45 football fields all together! You can find it in Pleasant Township, Pennsylvania. This island is also part of a larger protected area called the Allegheny Islands Wilderness, which is inside the Allegheny National Forest.

Discover Thompson's Island

Thompson's Island is a unique spot, not just for its natural beauty but also for its history. It's a quiet, wild place where nature thrives, and it holds a secret from a long time ago.

Island Location and Size

This island is located in the northwestern part of Pennsylvania. It's a peaceful part of the Allegheny River, which flows through the state. Being 60 acres, it's a good size for exploring, but it's kept wild as part of a special wilderness area. This means it's protected so plants and animals can live there without much human interference.

What Grows Here?

The forests on Thompson's Island are home to some very old and impressive trees. These are called "old growth" trees, meaning they have been growing for a very long time without being cut down. You can find tall Silver Maple and Sugar Maple trees, which are known for their beautiful leaves. There are also huge American Sycamore trees, which have unique patchy bark, and Slippery Elm trees. These old trees create a wonderful habitat for many creatures.

A Historic Battleground

Thompson's Island holds an important place in history, especially for Northwest Pennsylvania. It was the site of the only American Revolutionary War battle in this region. In 1779, during the war, a group of American soldiers led by Colonel Daniel Brodhead had a conflict with the Senecas people here. Colonel Brodhead's forces were successful in this encounter. This event is a reminder of the many historical moments that shaped the United States.
