The Thompson River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It's a branch, or tributary, of the Franquelin River. This means the Thompson River flows into the Franquelin River. You can find it in the area of Franquelin, which is part of the Manicouagan Regional County Municipality in the Côte-Nord region.
The main activity in the valley around the Thompson River is forestry. This means people work with trees and forests there.
Usually, the river's surface freezes from early November until the end of April. However, it's generally safe to travel on the ice from late November to early April.
Where Does the Thompson River Flow?
The Thompson River starts from a lake that doesn't have a name. This lake is about 0.6 km (0.37 mi) long and sits at an altitude of 129 m (423 ft). The lake is located in the municipality of Franquelin. The river's starting point is about 1.5 km (0.93 mi) northeast of where it joins the Franquelin River.
From its source, the Thompson River flows for about 2.0 km (1.2 mi). As it flows, it drops about 68 m (223 ft) in height. It mostly flows through a forest area.
Here's how the river flows:
- For 0.6 km (0.37 mi), it flows south through a lake called Lake Thompson. This lake is 0.5 km (0.31 mi) long and is at an altitude of 128 m (420 ft). Several smaller lakes also drain into the southeast side of Lake Thompson.
- Then, for 1.4 km (0.87 mi), it first flows south and then curves towards the southwest until it reaches its end.
The Thompson River empties into the east side of the Franquelin River. This meeting point is:
- About 4.9 km (3.0 mi) northeast of where the Franquelin River itself flows into the sea.
- About 18.2 km (11.3 mi) southwest of the village of Godbout.
- About 33.4 km (20.8 mi) northeast of downtown Baie-Comeau.
After the Thompson River joins the Franquelin River, the water continues to flow for about 7.8 km (4.8 mi) down the Franquelin River until it reaches the northern shore of the estuary of Saint Lawrence.
