The Three Creeks Conservation Area is a special natural place. It is located in Boone County, Missouri. This area has rugged land, much like the Ozark mountains. You can find many interesting rock formations here. These include caves, springs, and sinkholes.

This conservation area is just south of Columbia, Missouri. It is also near the well-known Rock Bridge Memorial State Park. The area gets its name from the three streams that flow through it. These are Turkey Creek, Bass Creek, and Bonne Femme Creek. The area covers almost 1500 acres. Most of it is covered in forests. The Missouri Department of Conservation manages this beautiful land. There are many trails perfect for hiking and exploring.

Discovering Three Creeks Conservation Area

Three Creeks Conservation Area offers a unique chance to connect with nature. It is a great spot for outdoor adventures. You can explore its trails and see its special landforms.

Nature's Special Features

The land here is part of the Ozark region. This means it has a unique type of landscape. It is known for its "karst" features. Karst is a type of land formed when water dissolves rock. This creates cool things like underground caves. It also forms natural springs where water flows from the ground. Sinkholes are another karst feature. These are dips or holes in the ground. They form when the rock below collapses.

A Place for Learning and History

In 2019, a generous gift helped the area grow. Hank Waters and Vicki Russell donated 207 acres of land. They used to own the Columbia Daily Tribune newspaper. This new land is next to the conservation area. It will be used to build a nature school. This school will be a team effort. It will involve Columbia Public Schools and the Missouri Department of Conservation.

The land around Three Creeks has a rich history. Many African-American families bought and farmed land here. They settled in this area after the American Civil War. Their hard work helped shape the community.

Protecting Our Waterways

The Three Creeks Conservation Area is part of a bigger project. This is called the Bonne Femme Watershed Project. A watershed is an area of land. All the water from this land drains into one main river or stream. This project helps keep the water clean. It also protects the natural environment. This work is important for all the plants and animals that live here. It also helps the people who use the water.
