Exploring Three Mile Bay's Past
Three Mile Bay was first settled between 1810 and 1820. A notable early resident was Asa Wilcox. He was a skilled builder who constructed many different types of ships.
- From 1835 to 1853, Asa Wilcox built 48 vessels.
- These included brigs, propellers, and schooners.
- Some of his ships, like the A.E. Vickery, later became shipwrecks.
- These shipwrecks now rest at the bottom of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. There are over 500 such wrecks in these waters.
Where is Three Mile Bay Located?
Three Mile Bay is found in the western part of Jefferson County. It is at the very beginning of a bay that shares its name. This bay is an inlet of Chaumont Bay, which is part of Lake Ontario.
The community is located along New York State Route 12E.
- If you travel northwest on Route 12E for about 8 miles (13 km), you will reach Cape Vincent. This town is on the St. Lawrence River.
- If you head southeast for about 17 miles (27 km), you will arrive in Watertown. Watertown is the main city and county seat of Jefferson County.
