A boy having bacteria collected from his throat

A throat culture is a medical test that helps doctors find out if tiny germs called bacteria or fungus are causing an infection in your throat. It's a common way to check for things like strep throat.

What is a Throat Culture?

A throat culture is a simple test. A doctor or nurse uses a special, soft cotton swab to gently rub the back of your throat. This swab collects a small sample of the germs that might be living there.

Why Do Doctors Do This Test?

Doctors use this test to figure out what is making your throat sore. If you have a sore throat, fever, or trouble swallowing, a throat culture can show if bacteria like Streptococcus (which causes strep throat) are the problem. Knowing the exact germ helps doctors choose the best medicine to make you feel better.

How is a Throat Culture Done?

The process is quick and usually takes less than a minute.

  • First, you will open your mouth wide.
  • The doctor or nurse will use a sterile (very clean) cotton swab.
  • They will gently rub the swab over the back of your throat and near your tonsils.
  • This might feel a little ticklish or make you want to cough or gag for a moment, but it doesn't hurt.

What Happens Next?

After the swab is taken, it goes to a special place called a laboratory.

  • In the lab, scientists put the swab into a dish with a special gel. This gel helps any bacteria or fungus from your throat grow.
  • They let it sit for a day or two. If there are germs, they will multiply and become visible.
  • Then, scientists look at these germs under a powerful tool called a microscope. This helps them identify exactly what kind of bacteria or fungus is causing the infection.
  • Once they know the germ, the doctor can give you the right medicine, like antibiotics if it's a bacterial infection.
