Discovering Thumb Lake
Thumb Lake gets its name from its unique shape, which looks a bit like a thumb when you see a map of its bottom. An island sticks out from the western part of the lake. The lake covers about 484 acres (1.96 square kilometers) and is very deep, reaching up to 152 feet (46 meters) in some spots.
Why is it Called Lake Louise?
The name "Lake Louise" is a bit of a mistake! It came from a former director of a camp who wanted to name the lake after his wife. However, the official name remains Thumb Lake.
Where is Thumb Lake Located?
This lovely lake is tucked away in the high lands east of the town of Boyne Falls. It is surrounded by thick, wooded hills. Because the lake is so deep and not much water flows into it from nearby land, its waters are incredibly clear.
Fish and Fun Activities
Thumb Lake is home to many different kinds of fish. You can find:
- Splake (a mix of lake trout and brook trout)
- Rainbow trout
- Yellow perch
- Smallmouth bass
- Northern pike
- Largemouth bass
- Smelt
There are places for everyone to enjoy the lake. On the eastern side, you will find a park with a swimming beach. On the southwestern side, there is a boat launch where you can put your boat in the water.
