Thyrone Tommy is a talented Canadian film director and writer. He is known for his amazing work on films like the short film Mariner and the feature film Learn to Swim. Both of these films were first shown at the famous Toronto International Film Festival. Thyrone Tommy was also nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for directing an episode of a web series called Revenge of the Black Best Friend.

Meet Thyrone Tommy: A Film Director
Thyrone Tommy is a creative filmmaker from Canada. He writes stories and directs movies, bringing his ideas to life on the big screen. His films often get great reviews and are shown at important film festivals.
Early Success with Short Films
Thyrone Tommy first became well-known for his short film called Mariner. This film was so good that it was chosen as one of the best Canadian short films of 2016 by the Toronto International Film Festival's "Canada's Top Ten" list. In 2017, Mariner also won the Lindalee Tracey Award, which is a special prize for new filmmakers.
Thyrone Tommy also studied filmmaking at the Canadian Film Centre. He finished his studies there in 2017, learning even more about how to make movies.
Making Feature Films
Thyrone Tommy's first full-length movie was Learn to Swim. This film was shown for the very first time at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. Critics really liked the movie, and it was even nominated for the DGC Discovery Award in 2021. Just like Mariner, Learn to Swim was also named to TIFF's "Canada's Top Ten" list, this time for 2021.
In 2022, a company called ARRAY, which is owned by the famous director Ava DuVernay, bought the rights to Learn to Swim. This meant that the film became available for everyone to watch on Netflix!
Thyrone Tommy also made another short film called Draft Day. This film was shown at TIFF as part of a special event called NBA Films for Fans. This event featured five Canadian short films that were all about basketball.
Awards and Recognition
In 2023, Thyrone Tommy received a nomination for a Canadian Screen Award. This award was for "Best Direction in a Web Program or Series." He was nominated for directing an episode called "The One Who Dies First" from the funny web series Revenge of the Black Best Friend.
In 2024, Thyrone Tommy was given the "pay it forward" grant from the Company 3 TFCA Luminary Award. This special grant was chosen by people representing the family of the late film director Charles Officer.
