Geography of Tibi
Tibi is surrounded by two mountain ranges. These are the Serra del Maigmó and the Serra de la Penya-roja. The town itself is built on the side of the Penya-roja mountain range. A river flows through the area. This river is known as Monnegre or Riu Verd, which means "Green River."
History of Tibi
Early Muslim Rule
Long ago, a group called the Muslims ruled the Iberian Peninsula, where Tibi is located. The castle in Tibi was built during this time. Tibi was part of the kingdom of a Muslim ruler named Zayt-Abu-Zayt. This lasted until the year 1240. After that, King James I of Aragon took control of the area.
The Treaty of Almizra
In 1244, an important agreement was signed. It was called the Treaty of Almizra. This treaty was a deal between two kings: King Alfonso X of Castile and King James I of Aragon. They drew a line on a map to mark the border between their lands. This border started in a town called Biar. It then went through Tibi and Basot, ending at the coast.
New Owners and Lords
After taking control, King James I of Aragon gave Tibi to Pedro Sánchez de Lienda. Pedro and his wife, Ixonis de Soler, became the new owners. At that time, only about 150 people lived in the small village.
Over the years, different powerful families owned Tibi and its castle. By the mid-1400s, it became part of a large area called the Marquisate of Villena. This area stretched from Jumilla in the north to Villena. Later, in the early 1700s, the Marquisate of Dos Aguas owned Tibi. This lasted until 1717.
