History of Tibú
Early Inhabitants and Development
The land where Tibú is today was first home to the Barí people. They lived there long before others arrived. In 1945, oil companies came to the area. They set up a camp to explore for oil.
On March 8, 1945, the Council of Cúcuta officially created the corregimiento of Tibú. A corregimiento is like a small district or local area. The Catholic Church also played a big part in Tibú's growth. They started the San Luis Beltran Mission. Later, on May 25, 1952, they opened a parish. The church helped design the first streets. They also gave out plots of land for the first houses and the main church building.
Becoming a Municipality
Tibú officially became a municipality on January 1, 1977. This happened in the middle of the Catatumbo Region jungle. This area was once a very wild and challenging place between Colombia and Venezuela.
Challenges and Peace Efforts
The town and municipality faced many difficulties due to conflicts in the region. This period was part of the Colombian Civil War (1960s–present). The area was a place where different groups struggled for control. Despite these challenges, the people of Tibú have worked towards peace and development.
