Tickera is a small town in South Australia. It is located on the northern coast of the Spencer Gulf, which is part of the Yorke Peninsula. You can find Tickera about 20 kilometers north of Wallaroo by road.

About Tickera

Tickera is well-known as a fishing town. Many people who live here work as professional fishermen. The town is even called "The Crab Capital of the Spencer Gulf." This is because a lot of crabs are caught in the waters nearby.

When fishermen are out catching crabs, it's common for small sharks to follow their boats. These sharks sometimes try to steal crabs from the nets! The water close to the shore in Tickera is very shallow.

Tickera was first mapped out in 1882. However, it did not grow much until the early 1970s. Around that time, people started buying holiday homes in Tickera. It also became a popular place for people to retire.

Tickera's Past

Tickera has a bit of history, especially with its schools and buildings.

Early Schools

The first school in Tickera opened its doors in 1887. However, the first teacher left that same year. A new teacher was not appointed until May 1892.

There was another school nearby called "Brucefield." It was about halfway between Tickera and Alford. This school first opened in 1883 as "Tickera West." It changed its name to "Brucefield" in 1885 but closed in 1886.

Because there were only nine students at Brucefield, the government decided not to hire a new teacher. People in the community talked about which school should stay open. In the end, the Tickera school closed in 1933.

Other Buildings

A Methodist church was built in Tickera in 1889. This church served the local community.

The Tickera Hotel opened in September 1884. However, it did not stay open for long. The hotel was bought by a group that was against alcohol. Because of this, the Tickera Hotel closed in October 1905.
