Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tim Wright is a talented musician and composer. He started making music in the early 1990s. He is known for his unique electronic and dance music. Tim has used several different names for his music projects. His most famous names are Germ and Tube Jerk. He was also a founding member of a band called Sand.

Tim Wright's Musical Journey

Starting as Germ

Tim Wright's first music releases were under the name Germ. People called Germ "one of the most important and innovative forces" in electronic music. It began as a solo project in his home. Later, he worked with other musicians. These included Hilary Jeffery (trombone), Matt Miles (double bass), and Nicholas Bullen (electric bass).

Germ released two albums, "Gone" and "Parrot," in 1995. He still uses the Germ name for some remixes today.

Becoming Tube Jerk

In 1996, Tim started a new solo project called Tube Jerk. He wanted to make music that was more for dance floors. A record label called iLL Recordings encouraged him to create music for techno and club audiences.

The Tube Jerk sound was easy to recognize. It had huge, rolling bass-lines, like those in drum and bass music. It also had tight, house-style drum beats. Tube Jerk has released two albums: "Fold" (1999) and "Shift" (2003). Many people know his song "Eight" and his remix of Cristian Vogel's "Whipaspank."

Music Under His Own Name

After the success of his Tube Jerk remix, Tim Wright started releasing music under his own name. He released two 12-inch vinyl EPs: "Searcher/The Walk" (2001) and "Going Down/The Lunge" (2002). These EPs mixed a 2step or UK garage rhythm with his powerful techno style. They were popular with fans of techno, UK garage, and breaks music.

Tim then recorded an album called "Thirst," released in 2004. It featured singers Toastie Tailor and Juice Aleem. He has also remixed songs for artists like Goldfrapp. Tim has performed live at big festivals, including Sónar in Barcelona. He continues to create and perform music as Tim Wright.

Playing in the Band Sand

Besides his solo work, Tim Wright helped start the band Sand. This was a five-person group that played experimental rock, jazz, and electronic music. The other members were Hilary Jeffery, John Richards, Neil Griffiths, and Rowan Oliver. They first performed in York in 1995.

Early on, Sand's music had a strong jazz feel. Tim's job was to change the sound of the other instruments in real time. Over time, their sound became more focused on guitar. They still kept a free, improvisational way of recording and performing.

Sand has released three albums: "Beautiful People Are Evil" (1999), "Still Born Alive" (2001), and "The Dalston Shroud" (2006). They also worked with a famous choreographer named Saburo Teshigawara. Together, they created a dance piece called "Green." It was performed in Tokyo and Melbourne.

Working at Parrot Music

Tim Wright also worked as the main engineer at Parrot Music. This used to be called Finsbury Park Studios. It was a private recording studio where much of his music was recorded. He also helped record music for the UK hip hop group New Flesh.

His Studies

In 2013, Tim studied for a PhD at the University of York. His studies focused on composing Electroacoustic music.
