The Timothy Goodman House is a very old house located at 567 Quaker Lane South in West Hartford, Connecticut. It was built a long time ago, in the early to mid-1700s. This makes it one of the few houses from the 18th century that are still standing in West Hartford today. Because it's so old and important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 10, 1986. This list helps protect special places in the United States.

What Does the House Look Like?

The Timothy Goodman House is in the southeastern part of West Hartford. It stands on the west side of Quaker Lane, which is a busy road. The house is made of wood and has two and a half stories. It has a pointed roof and its outside walls are covered with clapboards, which are long, thin boards.

Special Features of the House

The house has five sections across the front. It has a big chimney in the middle. The back of the house has a sloped roof that goes down very low, making it look like a "saltbox" house. This was a popular style long ago. The windows and doors are placed evenly, but the spaces between them are not all the same. The doors, windows, and corners of the house have simple decorations.

Inside, the house still has many original features from the 1700s. For example, the fireplaces have wood panels around them. The main support beams inside the house are covered. Even the doors and their metal handles are from the time the house was built!

How Old is the Timothy Goodman House?

It's a bit tricky to know the exact year the Timothy Goodman House was built. Experts have looked at the roof and think it might have been built around 1720. However, old records don't show a house on this land until 1778.

Who Owned the House?

In 1778, a man named Timothy Goodman sold the land and the house to Isaac and Gideon Webster. Timothy Goodman had bought the land in 1751. At that time, there was no house on it. He bought it from the grandfather of Noah Webster, who later became famous for creating the first American dictionary.
