Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Timothy Hall (born around 1637, died 1690) was an important religious leader in England. He served as the bishop of Oxford during the time of James II of England, who was the king.

Early Life and Education

Timothy Hall was born around 1637. His father was a woodturner and lived near St Katherine by the Tower in London. In 1654, Timothy began studying at Pembroke College, Oxford. At that time, the college was influenced by presbyterian ideas. He earned his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree there.

Early Career and Challenges

After college, Timothy Hall became a religious leader in Norwood and Southam. However, in 1662, he was "ejected" from these positions. This meant he was forced to leave his church roles. This happened because he did not agree with certain new rules for the Church of England.

In 1667, he agreed to the new rules. He then became a church leader in Horsendon, Buckinghamshire. He continued to serve in different churches. In 1669, he became the perpetual curate of Princes Risborough. Later, in 1674, he became the vicar of Bledlow. In 1677, he moved to a church in London called Allhallows Staining.

Becoming Bishop of Oxford

Under King James II, Timothy Hall supported the king's ideas. In 1687, he helped publish a royal declaration. This declaration was about liberty of conscience, which meant people could follow their own religious beliefs more freely.

When the Bishop of Oxford, Samuel Parker, died, King James II chose Timothy Hall to take his place. This happened on August 18, 1688. Timothy Hall was officially made a bishop on October 7 at Lambeth.

Challenges as Bishop

Even though he was made a bishop, Timothy Hall faced problems. The church leaders at Christ Church, Oxford would not let him take his place. They also stopped him from getting the money and property that came with the job. The university also refused to give him a special degree called doctor of divinity.

Later Life and Death

Soon after, the Glorious Revolution happened in England. This event led to King James II being replaced. At first, Timothy Hall did not want to promise loyalty to the new king and queen. However, he changed his mind at the last moment. This allowed him to keep his title as Bishop of Oxford until he died.

Timothy Hall passed away on April 9, 1690. He was buried on April 13, 1690, in St. John, Hackney.
