Tina Sloan Green, born on April 27, 1944, is a very important person in sports history. She was a head coach for the Temple Owls women's lacrosse team from 1975 to 1992. She also made history as the first African American to play for the United States women's national field hockey team. This was from 1969 to 1973.
Tina Sloan Green has been honored many times for her amazing career. She was added to the US National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1997. She also joined the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2013, she was inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.

Growing Up and School
Tina Sloan Green was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 27, 1944. Her parents, Norwood and Sally Sloan, were very religious. She grew up with six brothers and sisters. Her parents strongly encouraged all their children to finish high school. This was important to them, even though they had not finished high school themselves.
Tina went to a small school in Eastwick, Pennsylvania, for grades one through eight. Her graduating class had only 13 students. Before ninth grade, Tina was recognized as a very talented student. She was chosen to attend Philadelphia High School for Girls. Only twenty young African American women were selected for this school.
While at Philadelphia High School for Girls, Tina was a star athlete. Coach Jane Weitzenhoffer noticed her skills. She recruited Tina to play basketball, volleyball, and field hockey. Tina made the varsity team in all three sports. After high school, she earned a degree in Physical Education from West Chester University in 1966. She then received a Master's degree in Education from Temple University in 1970.
Her Amazing Career
After finishing college, Tina Sloan Green started working at Unionville High School. She was the first African American teacher at that school. There, she started and coached the school's first lacrosse team. She also worked as an assistant basketball coach and a physical education teacher.
Later, she taught and coached at William Penn High School. She was an assistant basketball coach and a swim coach there. From 1969 to 1973, Tina continued her field hockey journey. She became the first Black American to play for the United States women's national field hockey team.
In 1973, while still playing field hockey, Tina became the head coach for the Lincoln (Pennsylvania) Lions basketball team. She also coached the cheerleading squad and taught physical education. She even started a lacrosse team at Lincoln.
Coaching the Temple Owls
Tina Sloan Green became the head coach for the Temple Owls women's lacrosse team in 1975. She coached them until 1992. She was the first African American to be a head coach for a women's college lacrosse team. Under her leadership, the Temple Owls women's lacrosse team won national championships in 1982, 1984, and 1988. She also led the Owls to the NCAA Final Four 11 times.
Besides lacrosse, she also coached field hockey and badminton at Temple University. She was also a teacher there. When she retired, her coaching record with the Owls was impressive: 207 wins, 62 losses, and 4 ties.
After 32 years at Temple, Tina Sloan Green retired from coaching. She led three teams to national championships and two teams to second place. She was also a professor at Temple University. She helped with a project called "Sisters in Sports Science." For over ten years, she directed Temple University's National Youth Sports Program (NYSP).
In 1992, Tina Sloan Green helped start the Black Women in Sport Foundation. She co-founded it with Alpha Alexander, Nikki Franke, and Linda Greene. They all met at Temple University. Tina Sloan Green has also written two books.
Facing Challenges
After winning the 1984 national championship, Tina Sloan Green did not immediately receive the Coach of the Year award. It took ten years for her to be given this special recognition.
Her Family Life
Tina Sloan Green is married to Frank Green. They have two children, Traci and Frankie. Traci Green was an amazing tennis player at the University of Florida. Today, she is the head women's tennis coach at Harvard University. She started coaching Harvard's team in 2007.
Frankie Green played tennis at Florida A&M University. In 2006, he was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year. He now coaches tennis at the Upper Dublin Sports Center in Philadelphia.
