Tinder facts for kids
Tinder is a special material that helps you start a fire easily. Think of it as the first fuel you use to get a flame going, often with a match or a spark. Good tinder catches fire very quickly, even from a small spark.

What is Tinder?
Tinder is usually a very dry and fluffy material. It needs to be able to catch a spark and hold a tiny flame for long enough to light bigger pieces of wood, like small twigs. Without good tinder, it can be very hard to start a fire, especially in the outdoors.
Why is Tinder Important for Fire Starting?
Starting a fire is like building a chain reaction. You need something that can catch fire from a tiny spark. Tinder is the first link in this chain. Once the tinder is burning, it can then light slightly larger pieces of wood, which then light even bigger logs. This process helps you build a warm and useful fire.
What Materials Make Good Tinder?
Many different things can be used as tinder. The best ones are usually very dry and have a lot of surface area, meaning they are fluffy or shredded. Here are some common examples:
- Dry pine needles, dead leaves, or dry grass
- Thin strips of Birch bark, which burns well even when a little damp
- Dead, dry stalks of plants like goldenrod from the previous year
- Small pieces of cloth, lint from a dryer, or frayed rope (if they are made from natural plant fibers and not treated with chemicals that stop fire)
- Char cloth, which is fabric that has been burned in a special way to make it catch fire very easily
- Cotton swabs or even parts of cotton tampons
- Paper, paper towels, or toilet paper
- Punk wood, which is wood that is starting to rot and feels soft and crumbly
- Certain types of fungus, like the amadou or horse's hoof fungus
- Soft, fluffy bird down
- Very small, thin twigs (these are not the best tinder but are often easy to find)
- Fine-grade steel wool that has a soap coating
- Shavings from metals like magnesium, which burn very hot
