Tip Top is a ghost town located in Yavapai County, Arizona. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, and it's often empty or has very few residents. Tip Top was first settled in 1876, when Arizona was still a territory of the United States.
The Story of Tip Top
Tip Top was mainly a town built around silver mining. It became a town after two men, Jack Moore and Bill Corning, found a lot of silver in 1875. This discovery brought many people hoping to find their fortune.
Life in a Mining Town
For a while, Tip Top was a busy place. It even had its own post office, which opened on August 12, 1880. At its busiest, Tip Top had more than 500 people living there. This made it one of the biggest towns in Arizona at that time.
The silver ore dug up from the Tip Top mine was taken to a nearby town called Gillett. Gillett had a special mill where the ore was processed to get the silver out.
Why Tip Top Became a Ghost Town
Over time, the amount of silver found in the mine started to decrease. As the mining slowed down, people began to move away to find work elsewhere. By 1890, the population of Tip Top had dropped to only 65 people. The town's post office closed on February 14, 1895, which was a clear sign that the town was no longer thriving.
Today, many old buildings and ruins from Tip Top still stand. They are like silent reminders of the town's past as a busy silver-mining community.
