Tippecanoe Mall is a large indoor shopping center in Lafayette, Indiana. It first opened its doors in 1973. Today, its main stores, called "anchors," include JCPenney, Macy's, Kohl's, and Dick's Sporting Goods. The mall is owned by a company called Simon Property Group.

The Mall's Beginning: 1970s

Tippecanoe Mall was built by Melvin Simon & Associates and opened in 1973. When it first opened, it was planned to have two main stores: Montgomery Ward and Federal's. However, JCPenney became one of the first main stores instead. Soon after, another big store, William H. Block Co., was added as a third main store.

Changes and Growth: 1980s and 1990s

In April 1983, the Montgomery Ward store at the mall closed. Later that same year, strong winds damaged the Block store. While their store was being fixed, Block temporarily moved their items to the empty Montgomery Ward space. By 1985, Kohl's had taken over the spot where Montgomery Ward used to be.

In 1987, the Block's store changed its name and became Lazarus. The mall grew even bigger in 1994 with a new section. This new part of the mall added two more main stores: Sears and L. S. Ayres. L. S. Ayres moved to the mall from another shopping center nearby. In 1995, the very first Hat World store, which sells hats, opened at Tippecanoe Mall.

New Stores and Departures: 2000s and Beyond

The Lazarus store closed in 2002. In 2004, the old Lazarus building was torn down to make way for new stores: Dick's Sporting Goods and hhgregg. In 2006, the L. S. Ayres store changed its name and became Macy's.

More new stores arrived in the 2010s. In 2012, H&M, a popular clothing store, opened in a spot that used to be an MC Sports store. Sadly, hhgregg closed its doors in 2017 because the company went out of business. For Halloween, a temporary store called Spirit Halloween often uses the old hhgregg space.

On May 31, 2018, it was announced that the Sears store would be closing. It was part of a plan to close many Sears stores across the country. The Sears store at Tippecanoe Mall officially closed on September 2, 2018.
