Tirumalairayanpattinam is a small town in the Karaikal District of Puducherry, India. It's about 6 kilometers (about 3.7 miles) south of the main Karaikal city. This town is also known as TR Pattinam.

What's in a Name?
Tirumalairayanpattinam is part of the Karaikal District in Puducherry. People believe the town got its name from a king who ruled here long ago. A river, the Tirumalarajanar River, was also named after this king. This river flows into the Bay of Bengal a few kilometers north of the town.

In 2001, Tirumalairayanpattinam had a population of 18,862 people. Out of these, 9,289 were men and 9,573 were women. This means there were slightly more women than men living in the town.
Masi Magam Festival
The Masi Magam festival is a special yearly event. It happens on the full moon day in the Tamil month of Masi, which is usually between February and March. During this festival, statues of gods and goddesses from many temples in and around Karaikal are carried in parades. They are brought to the seashore for a special ceremony.
Thousands of people visit the seashore to take a dip in the sea. It is believed that this holy bath can wash away sins. The most important statue in this festival is Sowriraja Perumal from Thirukannapuram village in Tamil Nadu. There's a story that Sowriraja Perumal married a woman from the fishing community. Because of this, when the statue enters Tirumalairayanpattinam for the festival, local fishermen take care of it. They continue to look after the statue until the festival is over and the holy bath is completed. This festival is celebrated with great joy and excitement.
