Titica's Musical Journey
Titica was born in Luanda, the capital city of Angola. Her stage name, Titica, means "worthless" or "useless" in Portuguese. She chose this name to show strength and take back words that were used to hurt her. She is a transgender woman, which means she was assigned male at birth but identifies as female.
Starting as a Dancer
Before becoming a singer, Titica started her career as a back-up dancer. She danced for popular artists like Noite & Dia, Propria Lixa, and Puto Portugues.
Becoming a Recording Artist
Titica's first song recording happened by accident! She was helping another artist, Noite & Dia, create a chorus for a song. Her voice was recorded, and that's how her singing career began.
First Album Success
In October 2011, Titica released her first album, called Chão.... This album quickly made her famous around the world. One of the songs from the album, "Olha o Boneco," featured the singer Ary. This song became a huge hit! It was number one for three weeks on the Portuguese music show TOP + and for seven weeks on the Brazilian show Rolando Música.
Musical Inspirations
Titica often talks about her family background from Congo and how it influences her music. In a 2018 talk, she shared that she listens to "lots of music from Congo."
Blending Styles
She explained how her music mixes kuduro with Congolese music styles like kallé and n’dombolo. She looks up to Congolese musicians such as Pépé Kallé and Koffi Olomide.
Kuduro Queens
Titica also mentioned Fofandó, another kuduro artist, as a very important female artist in the kuduro scene. She said that Fofandó was "a queen who inspired us and I looked up to."
Helping Others: Activism
In 2013, Titica was chosen as a goodwill ambassador for UNAIDS. This means she helps spread awareness and support for people living with HIV/AIDS.
