Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Titlow Beach is a cool spot in Tacoma, Washington, USA. You can find it right next to Puget Sound, with awesome views of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. It's a fun place with a beach, a park, and even a water play area! All these cool spots are managed by Metro Parks Tacoma, which takes care of parks in the city. There are also two restaurants, a small boardwalk, and it's a popular place for scuba diving if you like exploring underwater.

History of Titlow Beach

Titlow Beach has an interesting past! Back in 1903, a local lawyer named Aaron R. Titlow bought the land. He built a fancy hotel there called the Hotel Hesperides, which was a popular place for people to stay and relax. The hotel was open until 1923.

A few years later, in 1926, the park district bought the hotel. In the 1930s, during a time called the WPA (which was a government program to create jobs during the Great Depression), the hotel building was updated.

Something really unique happened at Titlow Beach in 1963: they held octopus wrestling championships! It sounds wild, right?

The old hotel building, sometimes called the lodge, was used as a home for park staff until 1990. It got another big update in 2011. In 2013, the old swimming pool was replaced with the fun water play area you see there today.
