A Look Back at Titusville

Early Days and Industry

In 1910, a man named Robert Ingersoll Ingalls, Sr. started a company called Ingalls Iron Works in Titusville. This company made metal products. Later, in 1938, he also founded a big shipbuilding company called Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

A Community of Leaders

Since the early 1900s, Titusville has been home to many successful African American families. Many important people have lived here. For example, architect Wallace Rayfield was from Titusville. Condoleezza Rice, who became the United States Secretary of State, also grew up here.

Other notable residents include Freeman A. Hrabowski III, who became president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Birmingham has also had mayors from Titusville, such as William Bell and Larry Langford. City councilor Carole Smitherman and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Harold Jackson are also from this community.

Protecting the Neighborhood

In June 1993, people living in Titusville took action to protect their community. They went to court to stop a company from building a garbage transfer station nearby. This project was seen as unfair to their community.

The residents won their case, stopping the project. This was a big victory for the community. It showed how people can work together to fight for fairness in their environment. Later, the city and county governments decided to buy land in Titusville for new development.

Important Places in Titusville

The neighborhood is home to several important places. There is Ullman High School, which serves the local students. Memorial Park offers a green space for recreation. Many churches are also part of the community. One notable church is Westminster Presbyterian Church. Both Condoleezza Rice's father and grandfather served as pastors there.
