Tjuntjuntjara, sometimes spelled Tjuntjuntjarra, is a large Aboriginal community. It is found about 560 kilometers (350 miles) northeast of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. This community is located in the southern part of the Great Victoria Desert. It is part of the Shire of Menzies.

How Tjuntjuntjara Started

The Tjuntjuntjara community began in 1988. It was started after a water bore (a deep hole dug to find water) was drilled there.

The Spinifex People

The people of Tjuntjuntjara are part of a larger group called the Spinifex people. Their traditional lands stretch across the border between Western Australia and South Australia. In the 1950s and 1960s, these people were moved from their homes. This happened before the British nuclear tests at Maralinga took place.

Tjuntjuntjara is a large Aboriginal community. It is located about 560 kilometers northeast of Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia. It is in the southern part of the Great Victoria Desert. The land where Tjuntjuntjara is located is part of the Spinifex People's native title claim area. This means the Spinifex people have special rights to this land.

Getting Supplies

The community gets its regular supplies by truck. These trucks travel all the way from Ceduna in South Australia.

How Tjuntjuntjara is Run

The community is managed by an organization called Paupiyala Tjarutja Aboriginal Corporation. This group helps make decisions and manage things for the community. It was officially set up in 1989.

Art and Culture

Spinifex Arts Project

The Spinifex Arts Project is a special non-profit art center in Tjuntjuntjara. It is owned by Aboriginal people. This center helps artists create and share their work. It is also a member of Desart, which supports Aboriginal art centers.
