Toano is a ghost town located in Elko County, Nevada, in the United States. A ghost town is a place where most or all people have left, leaving behind empty buildings and a quiet atmosphere.
The Story of Toano
Toano was a town started by the Central Pacific Railroad in 1868. It was an important stop for the railroad. Toano was the very end (or 'terminus') of the Salt Lake Division line in the west.
It even had its own post office, which ran from 1869 until 1906. In 1870, about 117 people lived in Toano. The town had hotels and stores for travelers and residents.
Challenges and Decline
Life in Toano was not always easy. Between 1873 and 1874, two big fires caused a lot of damage. These fires destroyed several buildings and even a hotel.
The biggest change for Toano happened in 1884. This was when the Oregon Short Line Railroad was finished. This new railroad route meant that trains from Idaho no longer needed to pass through Toano.
Because of this, Toano quickly lost its importance. Fewer trains meant fewer people and less business. By 1906, Toano officially became a ghost town. Today, none of the original buildings from its early days are still standing.
