Tobique River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Tobique River (say "Toe-Bick") is a beautiful river in northwestern New Brunswick, Canada. It begins in Nictau Lake within Mount Carleton Provincial Park and flows for 148 kilometres (about 92 miles) until it joins the Saint John River near the towns of Perth-Andover.

Discover the Tobique River

The Tobique River generally flows southwest through Victoria County. It officially forms just outside the small community of Nictau, New Brunswick. Here, two important smaller rivers, the Little Tobique River and the Campbell River, meet to create the main Tobique River.

Journey Through Communities

As the Tobique River flows, it passes by several small communities. These include Riley Brook, Blue Mountain Bend, Oxbow, and Three Brooks. It then goes through the town of Plaster Rock. Just below Plaster Rock, another river called the Wapske River joins the Tobique. From there, the Tobique River flows west, passing by the lands of the Tobique First Nation, before reaching the Saint John River.

A River for Fun and Beauty

The Tobique River is a popular spot for outdoor activities, especially in the summer. Many people enjoy boating and kayaking on its waters. In July, the river hosts a special event called "Fiddlers on the Tobique river run," which is a fun gathering. Near the Tobique Dam, there's a lovely area that offers amazing views, especially when the leaves change color in the fall.

The Tobique Narrows Dam

The Tobique Narrows Dam is an important structure on the river. It was built between 1951 and 1953 by NB Power, a company that provides electricity. The dam is located about one kilometre (half a mile) from where the Tobique River meets the Saint John River.

How the River Got Its Name

The Tobique River is named after a Maliseet chief named Noel Tobec. He lived from 1706 to 1767 and made his home near the mouth of the river.
