Tofty is a ghost town located in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska. A ghost town is a place that was once a lively community but is now mostly empty. Tofty was famous for its gold mining, producing a lot of gold during its active years.
Where is Tofty?
Tofty is found in a remote part of Alaska. It is about 15 miles west of Manley Hot Springs. It is also around 91 miles west-northwest of Fairbanks, a larger city in Alaska. Tofty is at the very end of a road called Tofty Road. This road connects to the Elliot Highway (Alaska Highway 2).
The Road to Tofty
Tofty Road is a one-lane dirt road. It can be quite challenging to travel, especially in spring when it's muddy. Even though it's plowed in winter, heavy snow can sometimes make it impassable. The State of Alaska works to keep this road open.
Tofty's Gold Mining Past
Tofty became a town because of gold. Many people moved there hoping to find their fortune. The town was known for digging up a lot of gold. Over time, as the gold became harder to find, people started to leave. This is how Tofty slowly turned into a ghost town. Today, it stands as a reminder of Alaska's exciting gold rush history.
