Togher is a lively suburb located on the south side of Cork City in Ireland. Its name, "An Tóchar" in Irish, means "causeway" or "level place." Togher is part of the Dáil constituency called Cork South-Central, which is an area for electing members to the Irish parliament.

Exploring Togher's Location

Togher is surrounded by several interesting places. To the north, you'll find The Lough, a beautiful lake. To the south are Ballincrannig and Farmers Cross. Ballyphehane is to the east, and Waterfall and Wilton are to the west.

Rivers and Boundaries

A small stream called the Liberty Stream flows through Togher. It starts at Corcoran's Bridge and goes to Togher Cross. Here, it briefly goes underground before coming out again at Greenwood. It then joins the larger Tramore River, which flows towards Douglas.

Togher is split into two parts for counting people: Togher A and Togher B. In 2016, these two areas had a total population of 2,765 people. The Glasheen River forms the western edge of these areas. The Glenmore River partly forms the eastern edge, with Pouladuff Road also being part of the boundary up to Pearse Road.

A Look at Togher's Past

In the past, Togher was mostly farmland. Large areas of land were owned by important families, like the Sarsfields. These families were part of the Protestant Ascendancy, a group of powerful Protestant landowners in Ireland.

Religious and Community Growth

Togher was originally part of the St Finbarr's South parish. In 1890, it became part of a new parish called St Finbarr's West, also known as the Lough Parish. The main Catholic church in Togher, called the 'Church of the Way of the Cross', was built in 1972. It was built to serve the many new families moving into the growing suburb.

In 1973, the 37th Cork Scout Group moved its activities from the city centre to Togher. This shows how the community was growing. The Togher Historical Association has been working since 2009 to learn about and share the history of the area.
