The Toklat River is a river in Alaska, United States. It flows for about 85 miles (137 kilometers). This river is a branch of the Kantishna River.
The Toklat River is found in central Alaska. It helps drain water from the northern side of the Alaska Range mountains. This area is southwest of a city called Fairbanks.
Where the River Starts
The Toklat River begins in Denali National Park and Preserve. It starts from glaciers that do not have names. These glaciers are in the northern part of the Alaska Range. This area is northeast of Denali, which is North America's highest peak.
River's Journey
The river flows generally towards the northwest. It travels through rolling hills. Then, it reaches the wide, flat, treeless land called the tundra. This tundra is north of the Alaska Range.
River's Name
The name Toklat comes from a description by Lt. H.T. Allen in 1885. He called it the Toclat. The local people, the Dena'ina, call it Tootl'o Huno' (Lower Tanana: Tootl'o Huno').
Other names that have been used for the river include Tootl'ot Huno, Tootl'ot Huno' Hutl'ot, Tootl'ot No' , and Tutlut River.
