River's Journey

The river flows generally towards the northwest. It travels through rolling hills. Then, it reaches the wide, flat, treeless land called the tundra. This tundra is north of the Alaska Range.

River's Name

The name Toklat comes from a description by Lt. H.T. Allen in 1885. He called it the Toclat. The local people, the Dena'ina, call it Tootl'o Huno' (Lower Tanana: Tootl'o Huno').

Other names that have been used for the river include Tootl'ot Huno, Tootl'ot Huno' Hutl'ot, Tootl'ot No' , and Tutlut River.
