Toktamış Ateş (born April 4, 1944 – died January 19, 2013) was a very smart Turkish person. He was a professor, which means he taught at a university. He also wrote articles for newspapers and shared his thoughts on politics.
He was a professor of political sciences at Istanbul University. This means he studied and taught about how governments work and how societies are organized.

Toktamış Ateş was born in Istanbul, a large city in Turkey. He went to two different high schools: St. George's Austrian Secondary School and Vefa High School. After high school, he went to Istanbul University. He studied economics there and finished his first degree in 1967.
His University Career
Toktamış Ateş started working at Istanbul University right after he graduated. He began as a research assistant in the political sciences department. This job involves helping professors with their studies.
In 1969, he earned his Doctor of Science degree. His special project was about the political structure of the Ottoman Empire when it was first starting. This helped him become an associate professor in 1974. Later, in 1982, he became a full professor. This is the highest teaching rank at a university.
Sharing His Ideas
Professor Ateş taught students not only in Turkey but also in the United States and Germany. He loved to share his knowledge with people.
He also wrote daily articles, called columns, for two newspapers: Cumhuriyet and Bugün. This allowed him to share his ideas with many readers. He also appeared on a TV show called Siyaset Meydanı. On this show, he talked about political topics as an expert.
His Final Days
Toktamış Ateş passed away on January 19, 2013. He died at the Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine Hospital. His funeral was held at Istanbul University and also at Fatih Mosque. He was buried in Merkezefendi Cemetery on January 21, 2013.
