TBS Holdings, Inc., is a major Japanese company. It is a holding company, which means it owns and manages other companies. TBS Holdings is the main company behind the television network TBS Television and the radio network TBS Radio.

TBS Holdings runs two big networks. One is the Japan News Network (JNN), which has 28 TV stations across Japan. The other is the Japan Radio Network, with 34 radio stations.

You might know TBS from famous shows like Takeshi's Castle and Sasuke (also known as Ninja Warrior). These shows became so popular that other countries made their own versions! TBS also broadcast the Ultra Series programs.

A Look Back: The History of TBS Holdings

TBS Holdings has a long and interesting history. It started as a radio company and grew into a huge media group.

Early Days of Broadcasting

  • May 1951: The company began as Radio Tokyo (KRT). It was founded in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan.
  • December 25, 1951: KRT started its first radio broadcasts. Imagine listening to the radio on Christmas Day!
  • April 1955: KRT started TV broadcasting. This was a big step, bringing television to homes in Tokyo.
  • August 1, 1959: The Japan News Network (JNN) was created. This network connected many TV stations across Japan for news.
  • November 29, 1960: Radio Tokyo changed its name to Tokyo Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS). Its main offices and radio studio moved to Akasaka.
  • August 1961: TBS showed off its new cursive logo.

Growing and Changing

  • July 17, 1966: The popular show Ultraman started airing. It quickly became a hit in Japan.
  • 1971: TBS Radio made its signal stronger, reaching more listeners.
  • April 2, 1971: Return Of Ultraman began, bringing the Ultra Series back to TV.
  • March 31, 1975: There was a change in the JNN news network. Mainichi Broadcasting System (MBS) joined, becoming a key TV station for JNN in Osaka.
  • May 2, 1986: TBS started broadcasting the fun game show Takeshi's Castle.
  • October 19, 1990: The very last episode of Takeshi's Castle aired on TBS.
  • September 20, 1991: TBS made an agreement with CBS News in the U.S. This helped them share news and satellite broadcasts.
  • October 3, 1994: The current main building, the TBS Broadcasting Center, was finished. People sometimes call it "Big Hat."

Modern Era and New Developments

  • April 1, 1998: JNN News Bird, a news channel, started broadcasting. It was later renamed TBS News Bird.
  • February 2000: TBS adopted a new symbol based on the Japanese character for "person."
  • March 21, 2000: TBS created several new companies, like TBS Radio & Communications and TBS Entertainment. This helped them focus on different parts of their business.
  • October 1, 2004: Some of these new companies merged to form Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc.
  • April 1, 2006: Digital TV broadcasts began, offering clearer pictures and sound.
  • April 1, 2009: TBS became a certified broadcast holding company, changing its name to Tokyo Broadcasting System Holdings, Inc. The TV business was taken over by Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc.
  • March 11, 2011: During the big 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, TBS broadcast a special news program for three days without commercials to keep everyone informed.
  • December 1, 2011: TBS sold most of its ownership in the Yokohama BayStars baseball team to DeNA.
  • April 1, 2016: TBS Radio and Communications was renamed TBS Radio.
  • April 1, 2020: TBS Holdings and TV Asahi Holdings renewed their partnership with CBS Entertainment Group.
  • October 1, 2020: To celebrate its 70th anniversary, Tokyo Broadcasting System Holdings, Inc. changed its name to TBS Holdings, Inc.
