Tomáš Hertl's Hockey Journey
Starting Out in Czech Republic
Tomáš Hertl began his hockey journey with HC Slavia Praha in the Czech Republic. He played on their younger teams (U18 and U20) starting in 2009. He was a great scorer, getting many goals and assists for his teams.
Before the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, experts ranked Tomáš as one of the best young players in Europe. They noticed his large size and how well he played both offense and defense. Even though he wasn't the fastest skater, he was very agile. He was also a good passer and could score dangerous shots.
Joining the San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks picked Tomáš Hertl as the 17th overall player in the 2012 draft. He was the first European player the Sharks chose so early in the draft since 2004. After being drafted, Tomáš played one more season with Slavia Praha before moving to the NHL.
On 3 June 2013, Tomáš officially signed a contract with the Sharks. He played well in the preseason, scoring goals and assists. He even played on a line with famous players like Joe Thornton and Brent Burns.
First NHL Games
Tomáš made his NHL debut on 3 October 2013, against the Vancouver Canucks. He got his first point by assisting on a goal. At just 19 years old, he was one of the youngest Sharks players to start a season. In his very next game, he scored his first two NHL goals!
On 8 October 2013, Tomáš had an amazing game against the New York Rangers. He scored four goals in one game, helping his team win 9–2. This made him one of the youngest players in NHL history to score four goals in a single game. He was also the first Sharks player to do this since 1995. Because of his great start, he was named the NHL Rookie of the Month for October.
Injury and Comeback
Later in his first season, Tomáš got a knee injury in December 2013. He had surgery and missed many games. But he worked hard to recover and returned to play in April 2014. He even scored his first playoff goal that same month!
Tomáš signed new contracts with the Sharks in 2016 and 2018. During the 2018–19 NHL season, he had a fantastic year, scoring 74 points. The Sharks made it to the playoffs that year. In a tough series against the Vegas Golden Knights, Tomáš scored a huge goal in double overtime to force a Game 7, which the Sharks won! They then beat the Colorado Avalanche but lost in the Western Conference Finals.
In January 2020, Tomáš was chosen to play in the 2020 National Hockey League All-Star Game. He became the first Sharks player to score four goals in an All-Star Game! Unfortunately, he got another knee injury later that month, which ended his season.
On 16 March 2022, he signed a long eight-year contract to stay with the Sharks.
Moving to Vegas Golden Knights
On 8 March 2024, Tomáš Hertl was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights. This trade also included some draft picks. He played his first game for Vegas on 8 April, where he got an assist.
