Tomáš Hertl's Hockey Journey
Starting in Czech Republic
Tomáš Hertl began his hockey career with HC Slavia Praha in the Czech Republic. He played on their younger teams (U18 and U20) starting in 2009. He was a top scorer for the U20 team, showing his talent early on. In the 2011–12 season, he was one of the best scorers for Slavia's main team.
Before the 2012 NHL draft, many hockey experts thought highly of Tomáš. They noted his large size and strong defensive play. While some said he wasn't the fastest skater, his quick moves and good passing made him dangerous. He was also known for his powerful shots.
Joining the San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks picked Tomáš Hertl 17th overall in the 2012 draft. He was the first European player the Sharks chose with their top pick in many years. After being drafted, he played one more season with Slavia Praha.
On June 3, 2013, the Sharks officially signed Tomáš to his first NHL contract. He quickly impressed everyone during the preseason games. He even played on a line with star players like Joe Thornton and Brent Burns.
First NHL Games
Tomáš made his NHL debut on October 3, 2013, against the Vancouver Canucks. He got his first NHL point by assisting on a goal. At just 19 years old, he was one of the youngest Sharks to start a season. In his next game, he scored his first two NHL goals.
On October 8, 2013, Tomáš had an amazing game against the New York Rangers. He scored four goals in a single game! This made him one of the youngest players in NHL history to achieve this. He was also the first Shark to score four goals in one game since 1995. Because of his great start, he was named the NHL Rookie of the Month for October.
Dealing with Injuries
Later in his first season, Tomáš injured his knee in December 2013. He needed surgery and missed many games. This injury also meant he couldn't play for the Czech Republic in the 2014 Winter Olympics. He returned to play for the Sharks in April 2014 and scored his first playoff goal.
Tomáš continued to play well for the Sharks. He signed new contracts in 2016 and 2018. In the 2018–19 season, he had his best year yet, scoring 74 points. The Sharks made it deep into the playoffs that year. Tomáš scored a huge goal in double overtime against the Vegas Golden Knights to help the Sharks win a key game.
In January 2020, Tomáš was chosen to play in the 2020 National Hockey League All-Star Game. He scored four goals in one game there, a first for a Sharks player in an All-Star Game. However, later that month, he suffered another serious knee injury that ended his season.
On March 16, 2022, Tomáš signed a long-term contract extension with the Sharks.
Moving to Vegas Golden Knights
On March 8, 2024, Tomáš Hertl was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights. He played his first game for Vegas on April 8, 2024, getting an assist. He continues to be an important player for his new team.
