Thomas Richard Fogerty (born November 9, 1941 – died September 6, 1990) was an American musician. He was best known as the rhythm guitarist for the famous band Creedence Clearwater Revival. After he passed away, he was honored by being added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Early Life and Music Journey

Tom Fogerty was born in Berkeley, California, in the United States. He started singing rock and roll music when he was in high school. Tom and his younger brother, John, each had their own music groups.

Forming Early Bands

Tom's band was called Spider Webb and the Insects. They even signed a recording contract but broke up before releasing any songs. John's band, The Blue Velvets, then started playing music with Tom.

Eventually, Tom joined John's band. They recorded three songs together in 1961 and 1962. Tom sang the main vocals on these early songs.

Becoming The Golliwogs and CCR

By the mid-1960s, the group changed its name to The Golliwogs. They began recording music with Fantasy Records. During this time, both Tom and John shared the lead singing duties.

In 1967, the band changed its name again to Creedence Clearwater Revival, often called CCR. John became the main singer and wrote most of their songs.

Tom's Role in Creedence Clearwater Revival

While in CCR, Tom sang backing vocals. He also wrote some songs. However, only one of his songs from the Golliwogs days, "Walking on the Water," was re-recorded for CCR's first album.

Tom felt he didn't get enough chances to sing or write songs. This, along with disagreements with his brother, led him to leave the band. He left in early 1971 after they finished recording the album Pendulum.

Solo Career and Later Years

After leaving CCR, Tom Fogerty started making music on his own. He released several solo albums.

Solo Albums and Collaborations

His first solo album, Tom Fogerty, came out in 1971. It reached number 78 on the Billboard 200 music chart. He had some smaller hits like "Goodbye Media Man" and "Joyful Resurrection."

Tom also played rhythm guitar with the Saunders-Garcia band. On his second album, Excalibur, Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders played with him.

Reunion with CCR Members

In 1974, Tom released another album called Zephyr National. On this album, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford, who were CCR's bass player and drummer, played with him. Even John Fogerty played on one song called "Mystic Isle Avalon." This was the only song where all four original CCR members played together in the studio again.

Cook and Clifford also played on Tom's fourth album in 1974, Myopia.

Later Music and Reunions

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Tom Fogerty continued to record music. He also played with a group called Ruby.

In 1980, all four members of CCR played together again at Tom's wedding reception. They performed one more time at a school reunion three years later. Tom Fogerty lived in Scottsdale, Arizona, for the rest of his life.

Passing Away

Tom Fogerty passed away on September 6, 1990. He died due to health complications. After his death, a collection of his music called The Very Best of Tom Fogerty was released.

Tom was survived by his second wife, Tricia Clapper, and his six children.
