Tom Noonan was born on April 12, 1951, in Greenwich, Connecticut. His mother, Rita, was a mathematics teacher. His father, John Sr., was a jazz musician and a dentist. Tom had an older brother, John Ford Noonan, who was also an actor and writer. He also had two sisters, Barbara and Nancy.
Tom was a very good basketball player. He once shared that playing basketball taught him a lot about performing.
