About Tom Noonan

Early Life and Talents

Tom Noonan was born on April 12, 1951, in Greenwich, Connecticut. His mother, Rita, was a mathematics teacher. His father, John Sr., was a jazz musician and a dentist. Tom had an older brother, John Ford Noonan, who was also an actor and writer. He also had two sisters, Barbara and Nancy.

Tom was a very good basketball player. He once shared that playing basketball taught him a lot about performing. He said it helped him get interested in acting, even though he didn't start acting until he was 27. He learned how to be in front of people and do something he loved. These skills were very useful for his acting career.

A Career in Acting and Directing

Noonan began his career in theater, appearing in plays like Buried Child. In the 1980s, he started working in films. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches tall, his impressive height often led him to play strong or serious characters. Sometimes, his height was even used for funny moments, like in an episode of the TV series Monsters, which he also helped write and direct.

Memorable Film Roles

In 1986, Noonan played a significant role in Michael Mann's film Manhunter. This movie was the first to feature the character Hannibal Lecter. He also worked with Mann again in 1995, playing Kelso in Heat. Another famous role was playing the Frankenstein monster in The Monster Squad. He also appeared in RoboCop 2.

During the 1990s, Tom Noonan wrote several plays. He turned two of these plays into movies: What Happened Was... (1994) and The Wife (1995). In the 2000s, he continued to appear in various films. One of these was Synecdoche, New York, directed by Charlie Kaufman.

Television Appearances

Noonan also made many appearances on television. He was in popular shows like The X-Files, in an episode called "Paper Hearts" that was written just for him. He also appeared in crime dramas such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. He played Detective Victor Huntley in Damages. Other TV roles included parts in The Blacklist and Louie. He also played Reverend Nathaniel Cole in the series Hell on Wheels.

Voice Acting and Awards

In 2015, Noonan lent his voice to all the supporting characters in the stop-motion film Anomalisa. This unique performance earned him the San Diego Film Critics Society Award for Best Supporting Actor.
