Thomas Alvin Stith (born January 21, 1939 – died June 13, 2010) was an American professional basketball player. He was born in Greenville County, Virginia. Tom Stith played as a forward for the New York Knicks in the NBA. He was also a top player, called an All-American, at St. Bonaventure University in 1960 and 1961.
College Basketball Star
Tom Stith went to St. Francis Preparatory School in Brooklyn, New York. After high school, he decided to play college basketball at St. Bonaventure University. There, he teamed up with his older brother, Sam.
Together, the Stith brothers were a very strong scoring duo. In the 1959-1960 season, they scored a combined 52 points per game! Tom Stith became the first player from St. Bonaventure to be named a consensus All-American. He earned this honor in both 1960 and 1961.
When he finished his college career, Tom Stith was the all-time leading scorer for St. Bonaventure. He had scored an amazing 2,052 points! In 1960, he was the second-highest scorer in the entire nation, averaging 31.5 points per game. The next year, in 1961, he was third, averaging 29.6 points per game.
Professional Career
After his successful college years, Tom Stith was chosen by the New York Knicks in the 1961 NBA Draft. He was the second player picked overall! The only player chosen before him was Walt Bellamy.
Tom Stith joined the Knicks and played in 46 games during the 1961–62 season. However, his NBA career was cut short. Just one month into the season, he became very sick with a serious illness. This illness limited his time on the court. He played in only 25 games and averaged 3.2 points per game in the NBA.
